Allergies Part 2: Food Allergies and the Environment

It is reported that over 15 million Americans have food allergies. It could be anything from a slight tingling of the tongue to a strong anaphylaxis reaction where the entire body swells. Whatever the case, it's important to be in tuned with children and recognize if they are having a reaction to the foods they are eating or their environment.

My son threw up a lot when he was younger and I couldn't figure out what was going on. Then I remembered my friend telling me that her daughter would throw up anytime she ate dairy products. I started to put things together and realized that there was something he was eating that was making him sick. I finally figured out that it was eggs, which was confirmed by the allergist.

Also, when he was younger, he had pre-asthmatic symptoms. He had difficulty breathing and he was congested all the time. At night, I would have to prop him up with a pillow because he would wake up coughing throughout the night. I didn't know what was going on until summer break came and the symptoms disappeared. I realized it was the mold or dust in the school that caused his sickness because he didn't go back to that school and the symptoms never returned.

It's very important to be proactive and investigate any unexplained sickness so your child can get some relief.
